We covered the Prado 150 extensively in Blogs #108 and #111 — examining the generations, the engine options, the KDSS suspension, and the grade hierarchy from TX to VX. But those posts were primarily comparison-focused — evaluating the 150 against the 250 and examining the depreciation dynamics of the generational transition. What Kenya’s buyers specifically asking about the 150 Series in 2026 need is a dedicated, current buying guide focused entirely on how to identify and purchase the best available 150 Series example in today’s used market. This is that guide.

The 150 Series Prado in Kenya’s 2026 Used Market — The Current Picture

The 150 Series Prado ran from 2009 to 2023 — meaning the newest examples are approaching three years old and the oldest examples in Kenya’s current import window are from 2017 (given the eight-year import restriction). This concentration of available examples across the 2017–2022 model year range gives Kenya’s buyers a well-defined pool of vehicles to evaluate.

The post-2017 facelift examples — specifically those fitted with the 2.8L 1GD-FTV diesel — represent the sweet spot of 150 Series availability in 2026. This engine, covered in detail in Blogs #108 and #123, addressed the timing chain sensitivity of the earlier 3.0L 1KD-FTV while delivering improved power, torque, and refinement. A 2017–2021 TZ-G or VX grade example with the 2.8L diesel and documented service history is the specific configuration that represents the best available 150 Series purchase in Kenya’s current market.

Grade Selection — The 2026 Recommendation

The grade hierarchy covered in Blog #108 remains valid — TX for pure commercial work, TZ-G for the optimal balance of specification and value, VX for maximum specification. In 2026’s market context, the recommendation is narrower:

Buy the TZ-G grade. The TZ-G’s KDSS hydraulic stabiliser system — which the TX lacks — is the single most important specification difference within the 150 Series for buyers who use the Prado in genuine off-road conditions or on mixed surfaces. KDSS improves wheel articulation significantly in off-road use and allows the vehicle to transition between tarmac and rough terrain without stabiliser bar adjustments. A TZ-G with the KDSS fitted and functioning is fundamentally more capable than a TX regardless of all other specification differences.

The VX’s additional luxury specification over the TZ-G is genuinely pleasant — heated and ventilated seats, premium audio, additional technology — but the capability-relevant KDSS is already present in the TZ-G. The VX’s premium over the TZ-G in Kenya’s used market represents specification comfort rather than capability improvement.

The Inspection Checklist — Specific to the 150 Series

The 2.8L 1GD-FTV engine checks:

Oil condition — check the dipstick immediately when you view any Prado. Dark oil approaching the service interval is normal. Milky or frothy oil indicating coolant contamination is an immediate walk-away. Check the filler cap’s underside for cream or sludge — the same contamination indicator.

Start the engine cold and listen for the first fifteen seconds. A healthy 1GD-FTV starts smoothly without excessive smoke. A brief white smoke on a cold morning is acceptable condensation. Persistent white or blue smoke after the engine warms indicates combustion issues requiring investigation.

The KDSS system — TZ-G and VX grades:

The KDSS check is straightforward — drive the vehicle on uneven terrain or over a significant speed bump and observe whether the hydraulic system allows the normal body roll and articulation that should occur. A KDSS system with leaking hydraulic fluid loses its function and the vehicle handles like a TX without the KDSS’s benefit. Check for hydraulic fluid leaks at the KDSS cylinder ends during your inspection.

Chassis and underbody inspection:

More important for the 150 than for most vehicles because of how seriously many Kenyan Prados are used. Inspect the entire chassis rail length for any straightening, welding repairs, or rust that indicates hard use, flooding, or previous collision damage. A straight, rust-free chassis on a used Prado indicates a vehicle that has been used appropriately and maintained well.

Differential oils — critically important:

Ask specifically when the front, rear, and transfer case differential oils were last changed. If the seller cannot confirm or the service history does not document this, budget for an immediate differential service after purchase — approximately KES 8,000 to KES 15,000 — and factor it into your negotiation.

Mileage and Age — What’s Acceptable

A well-maintained 150 Series Prado with documented history can be entirely appropriate at mileages that would concern buyers of less proven vehicles. The 2.8L diesel’s design life — assuming correct oil specification and change intervals — supports 400,000km or more in good condition. A 2019 TZ-G example with 80,000km and complete service history is more desirable than a 2020 example with 50,000km and no verifiable maintenance records.

Prioritise documentation over low mileage when choosing between otherwise similar examples.

Pricing Guidance for 2026

In Kenya’s current market, well-maintained 2017–2021 TZ-G examples with the 2.8L diesel are typically priced between KES 4,500,000 and KES 7,500,000 depending on year, mileage, specification, and condition. The Prado 250’s arrival has softened 150 Series pricing from its 2022–2023 peaks — creating genuine value for buyers who understand what the 150 TZ-G delivers and who are not simply following the market’s attention toward the newest generation.

For buyers who do not need the 250’s GA-F platform’s specific improvements and who appreciate the 150’s established Kenya service history, the current pricing environment is among the most favourable the 150 Series has presented in recent years.
