When buying engine oil, check these things before paying:

Correct viscosity – Check the manufacturer’s recommended grade, such as 5W-30, 5W-40 or 10W-40.

API/ACEA rating – Make sure the oil meets the required performance standard for your engine.

Manufacturer approval – Some cars require specific approvals, especially Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volkswagen, Volvo, etc.

Petrol or diesel compatibility – Make sure the oil is suitable for your engine type.

Synthetic type – Full synthetic is generally preferable for modern engines, especially turbocharged engines.

Authenticity – Buy from a reputable dealer and check the seal, cap, label, batch/lot number and packaging for signs of counterfeit oil.

Manufacturing date – Avoid old or poorly stored oil.

Correct quantity – Know your engine’s oil capacity so you buy enough without unnecessarily overbuying.

Most important: Don’t choose oil simply because it’s expensive or a famous brand. The correct specification for your particular engine matters most.
