Driving school teaches you the rules of the road — but it rarely teaches you what to actually do when your brakes feel soft, you’re stuck in mud at 7am, or your windows fog up in the middle of a downpour. Real-world driving comes with real-world challenges, and most of us learn the hard way.

We’ve compiled the best automotive hacks that experienced drivers swear by — the kind of knowledge that takes years to pick up, handed to you in one place.

⛽ Fuel & Efficiency Hacks

1. The fuel cap arrow trick Ever pulled into a petrol station and forgotten which side your fuel cap is on? Check your dashboard fuel gauge — there’s a small arrow next to the fuel pump icon that points to the exact side your cap is on. Every time.

2. Stay in gear when decelerating Most drivers instinctively shift to neutral when slowing down, thinking it saves fuel. It actually does the opposite. Modern fuel-injected engines cut fuel delivery entirely when you’re decelerating in gear — so coasting in gear uses less fuel than coasting in neutral.

3. Check your tyre pressure regularly Under-inflated tyres create more rolling resistance, which forces your engine to work harder. This can cost you up to 3% more fuel per tank — which adds up significantly over a month of driving. A quick pressure check every two weeks costs nothing.

🚗 Tyre & Traction Hacks

4. Deflate slightly in mud or sand If you’re driving on a muddy track or sandy road, let a little air out of your tyres — down to around 20 PSI. This widens the tyre’s contact patch with the ground and dramatically improves grip. Just remember to re-inflate as soon as you’re back on solid tarmac.

5. Use your floormats if you’re stuck If your wheels are spinning in mud and you have nothing else, pull out your car’s floormats and shove them under the drive wheels. The texture gives just enough grip to get you moving again.

6. The coin tread depth test Insert a coin into your tyre’s tread groove. If you can see the top of the coin, your tread is too worn and your tyres need replacing — especially before the rainy season. Bald tyres on wet roads are one of the most dangerous combinations in driving.

🛡️ Safety & Vehicle Control Hacks

7. Steer into a skid If your rear end slides out, your instinct is to steer away from the slide — but this makes it worse. Steer towards the direction the rear is sliding (into the skid), and the car will naturally straighten itself out. It feels counterintuitive until you’ve done it.

8. What to do if your brakes fail Don’t panic. Progressively downshift through your gears — from 5th to 4th to 3rd and so on — to use engine braking to slow the car. Then apply the handbrake slowly and gradually (never yank it). Look for an escape route like a gravel verge, uphill slope, or open ground.

9. Move your hands to 9 and 3 Driving school teaches 10 and 2 — but modern safety guidance recommends 9 and 3. It gives you better steering control, reduces fatigue on long drives, and keeps your arms clear of the airbag if it deploys. A small change with a real safety difference.

👁️ Visibility & Awareness Hacks

10. Your side mirrors are set wrong Most drivers adjust their side mirrors so they can see the edge of their own car. This creates a huge blind spot. Instead, angle them outward until your car just disappears from view — you’ll cover far more road and dramatically reduce your blind spots.

11. Your horn has two modes On most cars, a light tap on the horn produces a short, polite beep — ideal for alerting someone without startling them. A full press gives you the full, sustained blast. Most drivers don’t realise this and either say nothing or scare everyone around them.

12. Clear fog faster with AC + heat together Fogged-up windows are a rainy season nightmare. The fastest fix is to turn on both your air conditioning and your heater simultaneously. The heat warms the glass and the AC dehumidifies the air — clearing your windows in a fraction of the time either would alone.

🔧 Practical Everyday Hacks

13. The tennis ball garage hack Hang a tennis ball from your garage ceiling on a string, positioned so it just touches your windscreen when your car is perfectly parked. You’ll never scrape a bumper or misjudge your parking again.

14. Set up your manufacturer’s remote unlock app Many modern cars allow remote unlocking via an official app. Set it up before you ever lock your keys inside — because the moment you need it, you won’t have time to figure it out.

15. WD-40 on rubber door seals Spray a little WD-40 on your door rubber seals before the rainy season. It prevents them from sticking, stops that annoying squeaking sound when you open the door in the rain, and extends the life of the rubber.

💰 Buying & Ownership Hacks

16. Negotiate the total price, not the monthly payment When buying a car on financing, dealers love to talk monthly payments — because they can make an expensive car seem affordable by simply stretching the loan term. Always negotiate the total price of the vehicle first, then discuss financing separately.

17. Service at the start of a season, not the end Most people service their car after a long trip or at the end of a hard season. But the smarter move is to service before the season starts — especially before the rains. That way your car is in peak condition when the roads get tough, not already worn down.

18. A clean engine bay helps you spot problems early A dirty engine bay hides leaks, cracks, and worn components. A periodic clean (done carefully, avoiding electronics) means you’ll spot that oil leak or cracked hose before it becomes a breakdown — not after.

19. Know where your car’s water wading depth is Every car has a maximum wading depth — the deepest water it can safely drive through. For most sedans, this is around 300–400mm. Driving through deeper water risks hydrolocking your engine, which can be catastrophic and expensive. When in doubt, turn around.

20. Keep an emergency kit in your boot A basic kit — jumper cables, a tyre inflator, a torch, water, a reflective triangle, and a basic toolkit — costs very little but can save you in countless situations. Most drivers never think about it until they need it at midnight on a deserted road.

Final Thought

The best drivers aren’t just those who know the road rules — they’re the ones who understand their car, anticipate problems, and know exactly what to do when things go sideways. Whether it’s a rainy season downpour, a muddy detour, or a flat tyre on the highway, these hacks give you the edge that driving school never did.
