How to Buy a 2018 Highlander via Clyde Motors (Nairobi)
Here’s a step‑by‑step buying guide, using Clyde Motors as your dealer/import partner.
Step 1: Initial Inquiry & Stock Check
- Contact Clyde Motors to ask if they have any 2018 Toyota Highlander units in stock. If not, ask if they can source one.
- Request details: trim level (LE, XLE, SE, Limited, etc.), whether it’s the 4‑cyl or V6, FWD or AWD, mileage, condition, accident history.
Step 2: Documentation & Import / Clearing Costs
- For imported units, request full auction sheet (if used), or the factory build sheet.
- Ensure correct VIN / chassis number and engine number.
- Get a landed cost estimate: purchase price + shipping + insurance + customs duty + VAT + port handling + clearing + registration (NTSA).
- Ask about conformity / KEBS / TBS requirements.
Step 3: Physical Inspection & Mechanic Check
- Inspect body for damage, rust, frame alignment.
- Under‑body inspection (including suspension, exhaust, etc.).
- Engine health: listen for unusual sounds, check for leaks, check compression or whatever test possible.
- Transmission behaviour: make sure the gear shifts are smooth, no jerks or delays.
- Test all electronics (windows, AC, infotainment, cameras, etc.).
Step 4: Negotiation & Payment
- Use comparable Highlanders in Kenya / East Africa to benchmark price.
- Factor in all extra costs in negotiations.
- Secure payment: only pay full amount once you have seen vehicle & confirmed documentation.
Step 5: Clearance, Registration & Ongoing Care
- Arrange clearing from port, KEBS / other inspections.
- Register with NTSA, get logbook, number plates.
- Do immediate service after purchase: oil change, filter, check fluids etc.
- Keep maintenance records; helps with reliability and resale.
