Kenya’s pickup truck market conversation is dominated by two vehicles — the Toyota Hilux and the Isuzu D-Max. Both deserve their prominent positions. But there is a third pickup that has been quietly building a case for serious consideration — the Mitsubishi L200 Triton. A vehicle with genuine off-road credentials, a well-engineered diesel powertrain, and specification levels that frequently exceed comparably priced competitors. In this post we make the full case for the Triton as a genuine alternative to Kenya’s pickup mainstream.

What is the Mitsubishi L200 Triton?

The Mitsubishi L200 Triton is a mid-size pickup truck that has been in production since 1978 and is now in its sixth generation (2023–present). The fifth generation (2015–2022) is the most commonly available in Kenya’s used import market. It competes directly with the Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-Max, and Nissan Navara in the competitive mid-size pickup segment.

The Triton’s heritage includes serious off-road motorsport credentials — Mitsubishi dominated the Dakar Rally in the 1990s and early 2000s with derivatives of its pickup platform, and the Triton inherits that off-road development philosophy in its chassis tuning and drivetrain engineering.

The 2.4L MIVEC Diesel — Modern, Efficient, Capable

The fifth-generation Triton is powered by Mitsubishi’s 2.4L 4N15 MIVEC turbodiesel — a modern, common-rail direct injection engine producing approximately 133 horsepower and 430Nm of torque.

The 4N15 is a notably refined diesel for a working pickup — quieter than many competitors and producing its torque at lower RPM than some rivals, giving the Triton a composed, effortless character in both urban and highway driving. Real-world fuel consumption in Kenyan mixed conditions is typically 10–13km/L — competitive with the Hilux and D-Max.

The engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission depending on specification, and the automatic variant’s smooth shifts in Nairobi traffic make it an easy daily driver despite the pickup body.

The Super Select 4WD System — An Advantage Over Competitors

Here is where the Triton distinguishes itself most clearly from the Hilux. As covered in the Pajero blog (#72), Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4WD system is one of the most sophisticated and operationally flexible four-wheel drive systems available.

Unlike the Hilux’s part-time 4WD that must be disengaged on tarmac, the Triton’s Super Select allows:

2H: Standard rear-wheel drive for fuel efficiency on tarmac. 4H: Full-time AWD with open centre differential — usable on any surface including tarmac, wet roads, and mixed conditions without drivetrain wind-up. 4HLc: AWD with centre differential locked for more demanding mixed surfaces. 4LLc: Low range with centre differential locked for serious off-road situations.

The ability to drive in 4H on tarmac — particularly during Kenya’s heavy rain seasons when wet roads create genuine traction challenges — is a genuine operational advantage over the Hilux for buyers who value all-weather confidence as a daily priority.

Payload and Towing — Competitive With the Segment

The Triton double cab offers a payload of approximately 800–900kg — slightly lower than the Hilux’s 1,000kg but adequate for most non-commercial double cab applications. Towing capacity of 3,100kg braked is competitive for family and light commercial towing requirements.

For buyers who need maximum payload for heavy commercial use, the Hilux’s higher payload figure is a genuine consideration. For buyers whose primary use is lifestyle, light commercial, and mixed family/work use, the Triton’s figures are entirely adequate.

Interior Specification — Where the Triton Impresses

The fifth-generation Triton’s interior specification in higher trim levels genuinely surprises buyers who expect a basic work vehicle. The top-specification Triton arrives with leather upholstery, a large touchscreen infotainment system, a reversing camera, climate control, and a quality interior finish that competes well with the Hilux’s equivalent grade.

The cabin is also notably comfortable for a pickup — seat quality, noise insulation, and driving position ergonomics in the Triton are genuine strengths that make it a pleasant daily commute vehicle as well as a capable weekend and working truck.

What to Watch When Buying a Used Triton in Kenya

DPF on newer variants: Some Triton variants have diesel particulate filters. Confirm whether your specific vehicle is DPF-equipped and whether the usage pattern suits DPF maintenance requirements.

Super Select transfer case operation: Test all four modes carefully and confirm smooth engagement and disengagement of each mode during the inspection.

Parts availability: Mitsubishi pickup parts in Nairobi are available but the network is narrower than Toyota’s. Confirm your mechanic’s sourcing capability before purchasing.

Triton vs Hilux — The Honest Conclusion

The Hilux wins on parts network, resale value, and brand trust in Kenya’s market. The Triton wins on the Super Select 4WD system’s flexibility, the refined diesel engine character, and typically lower purchase price for equivalent specification and age. For buyers who have identified reliable Mitsubishi servicing and for whom the 4WD system flexibility is genuinely valued, the Triton is an excellent and underappreciated choice.
