When the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series was discontinued in 2021 after fifteen years of production, Kenya’s premium SUV community wondered what could possibly fill the void left by the V8. The answer arrived as the Land Cruiser 300 Series β a vehicle that Toyota describes as the most sophisticated Land Cruiser ever produced. In Kenya’s used import market, 300 Series examples are now beginning to appear with increasing frequency as Japanese domestic market vehicles enter the export pipeline. In this post we examine what the 300 brings, what it costs to own in Kenya, and whether it truly justifies the premium over a well-specified 200 Series.
The 300 Series Architecture β A New Foundation
The Land Cruiser 300 is built on Toyota’s GA-F TNGA platform β the same architecture underpinning the Prado 250, Lexus LX, and Land Cruiser 250. This platform delivers a 50% increase in body rigidity over the 200 Series’ frame β a meaningful improvement that contributes to both on-road refinement and off-road capability.
The most immediately apparent change from the 200 to the 300 is weight. The 300 Series is approximately 200kg lighter than the 200 Series despite being equally capable β a result of the new platform’s more efficient structural design and the elimination of the heavy V8 engine.
Engines β From V8 to Twin-Turbo V6
This is the change that dominated discussion when the 300 launched β Toyota replaced the beloved V8 with a new twin-turbocharged V6.
3.5L V35A-FTS Twin-Turbo Petrol V6: Producing 305 horsepower and 650Nm of torque. This is the primary engine in most markets receiving the 300 Series. The twin-turbo architecture fills torque delivery from very low RPM, and 650Nm represents more torque than the 200 Series petrol V8 produced. Fuel consumption in Nairobi conditions is approximately 12β14km/L β improved over the V8’s thirstier profile.
3.3L V6 Twin-Turbo Diesel (F33A-FTV): Available in selected markets including some African market specifications. Producing 227 horsepower and 700Nm of torque β extraordinary torque for an SUV of this size. The diesel 300’s pulling power for towing and loaded driving is in a class of its own. Fuel consumption of approximately 10β13km/L in Kenyan mixed conditions is an improvement over the 200’s diesel.
Hybrid variants: Beginning to appear in the market, combining the twin-turbo petrol with hybrid assistance for improved efficiency.
All 300 Series engines are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission β a significant advancement over the 200’s 8-speed that contributes to both efficiency and driving refinement.
Grades Available in Kenya’s Market
VX: The entry point for most buyers β full leather, advanced safety suite, multi-terrain select, crawl control, and the complete Land Cruiser 300 technology package.
ZX: The flagship β every feature Toyota offers. The ZX’s interior approaches luxury car territory with its material quality, the number of electronic systems, and the level of standard equipment.
GR Sport: As covered in Blog #113, the GR Sport 300 adds Gazoo Racing suspension development for enhanced off-road capability alongside dramatic visual differentiation.
Off-Road Capability β How the 300 Compares to the 200
The 300 Series is more off-road capable than the 200 in measurable terms β better wheel articulation from the new platform, more sophisticated multi-terrain electronics, and improved approach and departure angles from the lighter body construction. The E-KDSS system on the 300 β an electronically controlled version of the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System β manages stabiliser bar stiffness automatically and more precisely than the 200’s hydraulic KDSS.
In Kenya’s real-world off-road conditions β national park tracks, upcountry farm access roads, the Mara’s river crossings β the 300 Series is unquestionably capable. Whether that additional capability over the 200 is relevant to most Kenyan buyers’ actual use is an honest question each buyer must answer.
300 vs 200 β The Value Question for Kenya
The 300 Series commands a very significant premium over comparable 200 Series examples in Kenya’s used import market. For buyers evaluating both, the honest calculation is:
The 200 Series delivers 95% of the 300’s capability in Kenya’s typical usage conditions, with better-established service history in the local market, wider parts availability, and the 200’s known reliability record in Kenya’s specific environment. The 300 delivers a meaningfully more refined driving experience, lighter weight, more sophisticated electronics, and a newer platform with better long-term compliance prospects as emissions regulations tighten globally.
For buyers who place premium on the absolute latest technology, maximum refinement, and the newest platform’s engineering, the 300 is justified. For buyers who prioritise proven local support and the best value for capability delivered, a well-maintained 200 Series remains extraordinary value.
