Nissan’s e-POWER is essentially an electric car that carries a gasoline engine only to generate electricity.

How it works

The system has three main parts:

  1. Gasoline engine ⛽ — runs a generator; it generally does not drive the wheels directly.
  2. Battery 🔋 — stores electricity and supplies extra power when needed.
  3. Electric motor ⚡ — drives the wheels, just like in a battery EV.

So the energy flow is roughly:

Fuel → gasoline engine → generator → electricity → electric motor → wheels

The battery sits in the middle and helps balance the system.

What happens when you drive?

  • Starting / low-speed driving: The battery can power the electric motor, giving you the smooth, quiet feel of an EV.
  • Accelerating hard: The engine-generator produces electricity, while the battery can provide additional power to the motor.
  • Cruising: The gasoline engine can run the generator efficiently to provide electricity to the motor and/or recharge the battery.
  • Braking: The electric motor works as a generator, recovering some of the car’s kinetic energy and putting it back into the battery. This is regenerative braking.

The important distinction is that you don’t normally plug an e-POWER vehicle into a charger. The gasoline engine ultimately supplies the energy, while the wheels are driven electrically.

e-POWER vs. a conventional hybrid

A conventional hybrid such as Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive can mechanically connect the gasoline engine to the wheels under certain conditions.

Nissan e-POWER:

Engine → electricity → electric motor → wheels

Typical conventional hybrid:

Engine and/or battery → drivetrain → wheels

That means e-POWER can give you an EV-like driving experience—instant electric-motor torque, smooth acceleration, and regenerative braking—without requiring charging infrastructure.
