Causes include low fluid level, degraded fluid, or early pump wear. Investigate and address immediately β the same whining noise if ignored becomes a failing pump.
Stiff steering at low speeds: HPS assistance is most critical at low speeds and during parking manoeuvres. Stiffness specifically at low speeds that disappears at highway speeds indicates the pump is providing reduced pressure β from low fluid, degraded fluid, or pump wear.
Fluid leaks: Any fluid leak from the power steering system β visible as oily spots beneath the vehicle in the area of the front wheels or steering rack β requires immediate attention. Identify the leak source (pump, high-pressure line, steering rack, or low-pressure return line) before the system loses sufficient fluid to cause pump damage from running dry.
Loose or vague steering feel: A steering feel that has become notably less precise β requiring more wheel input to achieve the same vehicle direction change β can indicate rack wear that the fluid’s lubricating function could not prevent due to degradation or contamination.
The Power Steering Fluid Change Procedure
Power steering fluid change on most vehicles is a manageable DIY task or a straightforward service item for any mechanic. The basic procedure: locate the power steering reservoir, remove the cap, use a turkey baster or suction pump to remove as much old fluid as possible from the reservoir, refill with new fluid of the correct specification, run the engine with the steering turned lock-to-lock several times to circulate new fluid through the system, then repeat the drain and refill to achieve a more complete fluid exchange.
The correct fluid specification is essential β use the type specified in your owner’s manual or on the reservoir cap. Most Japanese vehicles use either Dexron III ATF or a specific power steering fluid. Mixing fluid types can cause seal swelling or shrinkage and pump damage β always use the correct type.
Electric Power Steering β The Maintenance Is Different
For EPS-equipped vehicles, the absence of hydraulic fluid eliminates the fluid maintenance requirement. However, EPS systems have their own specific considerations.
Battery health: EPS systems draw significant current from the vehicle’s electrical system. A marginal battery creates EPS warning lights and reduced assistance β EPS problems that appear electrical in nature frequently resolve with a healthy battery installation.
Torque sensor calibration: The EPS system’s torque sensor β which detects steering wheel input force to determine appropriate assistance level β can require recalibration after wheel alignment work, steering system repairs, or software resets. An EPS system that feels unusually heavy or light after any steering or suspension work should be checked for torque sensor calibration by a mechanic with appropriate diagnostic equipment.
