Kenya’s eight-year import restriction means the used vehicle pool is constantly evolving — vehicles that are widely available today will age out of import eligibility within the next few years, and the window to acquire genuinely excellent examples at accessible prices is closing for some of the most compelling vehicles in the market. 1. Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150 Series TZ-G (2017–2021)

The ninth-generation Hilux’s launch and the Prado 250’s establishment are shifting buyer attention upward — creating a brief window where 150 TZ-G pricing may soften slightly before its scarcity value reasserts.
Why buy now: The 150 TZ-G remains the most comprehensively supported, most practical-for-Kenya-conditions, and best-value premium medium SUV in Kenya’s used market. It will never be cheaper in real terms than it is today.
2. Honda Vezel Hybrid (RU3/RU4, 2014–2021)
The case: The Honda Vezel Hybrid’s combination of Honda build quality, the Magic Seat system’s versatility, and outstanding fuel efficiency at 18–22km/L in Nairobi conditions makes it one of the most practically excellent urban vehicles available. The 2014 examples are now at the import eligibility limit — and the supply of genuinely low-mileage, clean-condition examples from Japan is progressively reducing as the generation ages.
The window: 2018–2021 examples remain importable for several more years. But the best examples — low mileage, hybrid battery health confirmed, full Japanese service history — are the ones that disappear from availability first and are replaced by higher-mileage, more worked examples.
Why buy now: At current petrol prices of KES 197.60 per litre, the Vezel Hybrid’s monthly fuel saving over a petrol equivalent is KES 10,000–13,000. The vehicle pays for its modest premium over petrol alternatives within 24 months. Delaying costs you that saving every month.
3. Subaru Forester SJ (2013–2018)
The case: The fourth-generation Subaru Forester represents Subaru at its most practical and capable for Kenya’s conditions — the highest ground clearance in its class at 220mm, standard Symmetrical AWD, and the FA engine that addressed the EJ’s head gasket sensitivity. 2013 examples have aged out of Kenya’s import window. 2018 examples remain importable until 2026.
The window: This is the most urgent entry on this list. 2018 SJ Foresters are at the exact edge of the import window right now. The availability of clean, low-mileage SJ Foresters in Kenya’s market will decline sharply over the next twelve months as the import pool from Japan narrows.
Why buy now: The SJ Forester delivers AWD capability, Toyota-competitive ground clearance, and Subaru’s distinctive driving character at prices below comparable Toyota crossovers. When the SJ availability tightens, its used market price will rise to reflect scarcity.
4. Lexus RX 450h AL10/AL20 (2009–2022)
The case: As covered in detail in Blog #52, the Lexus RX 450h offers luxury car interior quality with Toyota mechanical reliability and hybrid efficiency — a combination no European competitor at its price point can match. The AL10 fourth generation is at the import window edge for older examples, and the cleanest AL20 fifth-generation examples at lower mileages represent the vehicle at its finest.
The window: The AL20 (2015–2022) remains well within the import window for most examples. But the phenomenon of parallel demand — both luxury SUV buyers and hybrid efficiency buyers seeking the same vehicle — means that genuinely excellent AL20 examples at fair prices are moving faster than they were two years ago.
Why buy now: The Lexus RX 450h at its current used import pricing represents some of the best luxury value available anywhere in Kenya’s vehicle market. As the category becomes more widely understood, pricing will reflect its qualities more accurately — to the buyer’s disadvantage.
5. Toyota Harrier Hybrid AXUH80 (2020–2025)
The case: The fifth-generation Harrier Hybrid combines Toyota’s most attractive crossover design with the fifth-generation hybrid system’s efficiency and the premium interior specification that defines the Harrier’s market position. Why buy now: The Harrier Hybrid’s monthly fuel saving at current prices is KES 14,000–17,000 versus a conventional petrol premium SUV. Combined with the vehicle’s premium specification and Toyota reliability, it represents the single most compelling premium urban SUV value in Kenya’s current market.
