One of the great joys of owning a reliable car in Kenya is the freedom it gives you to explore. Nairobi sits at the centre of some of East Africa’s most spectacular landscapes β€” savannah plains, highlands, rift valley escarpments, beaches and forests β€” and most of the best destinations are within a few hours’ drive. If you have been meaning to get out of the city but keep putting it off, consider this your nudge.

Here are five of the best road trip routes you can drive from Nairobi this weekend.

1. Nairobi to Naivasha β€” 1.5 Hours (90km)

The drive to Naivasha via the Mai Mahiu road offers one of the most dramatic landscapes in Kenya. After climbing out of Nairobi through Kikuyu, the road descends steeply into the Rift Valley with sweeping views across the valley floor that are genuinely breathtaking β€” particularly in the early morning when the light is golden and the valley is partially misted.

Lake Naivasha itself offers boat rides to see hippos and birds, walks through Hell’s Gate National Park where you can cycle among wildlife, and excellent accommodation at all price points from budget campsites to luxury lodges.

The road is largely good tarmac and manageable in most vehicles. A standard sedan can handle this route without difficulty, though an SUV adds comfort on the rougher sections near Hell’s Gate.

Best for: Families, couples, first-time road trippers. An easy, beautiful introduction to Kenyan road travel.

2. Nairobi to Amboseli β€” 4 Hours (240km)

The drive south toward Tanzania and Amboseli National Park passes through Athi River, Emali and the dry Kajiado plains β€” a landscape that gradually flattens and opens as you head south, with Mount Kilimanjaro appearing on the horizon as you approach the park.

Amboseli offers some of Kenya’s most iconic wildlife viewing β€” large elephant herds with Kilimanjaro as a backdrop β€” and the park is a genuinely world-class safari destination. It is very accessible for a weekend trip, and there are excellent lodges and camps inside and around the park.

The road to Amboseli has improved significantly in recent years and is largely good tarmac. An SUV is recommended for comfort and for accessing lodges inside the park, but a low-clearance vehicle can manage the main road.

Best for: Wildlife lovers, photography enthusiasts, anyone wanting a proper safari without a flight.

3. Nairobi to Nakuru β€” 2 Hours (160km)

The drive northwest to Nakuru via the Nakuru highway passes through Naivasha and climbs into the cooler Rift Valley highlands. Lake Nakuru National Park β€” famous for its flamingos, rhinos and lions β€” is one of Kenya’s most visited parks and is very easily done as a weekend trip from Nairobi.

Beyond the park, Nakuru town itself has grown considerably and offers good food, accommodation, and access to Menengai Crater β€” an ancient volcanic crater with excellent views over the Rift Valley.

The highway is generally in good condition and busy β€” drive attentively, particularly through the towns along the route. This is a comfortable drive for most vehicles.

Best for: Families, wildlife enthusiasts, those wanting a mix of nature and town exploration.

4. Nairobi to Nanyuki and Mount Kenya β€” 3 Hours (200km)

The drive north through Thika, Karatina and up to Nanyuki offers a completely different landscape from the Rift Valley routes β€” lush highland tea and coffee country giving way to the dramatic moorland and forests of the Mount Kenya region.

Nanyuki is a charming highland town with excellent restaurants, accommodation, and the Equator line running directly through it. The drive into the Mount Kenya foothills β€” Timau, Meru β€” is spectacular. For the adventurous, there are excellent conservancies and wildlife experiences in the Laikipia Plateau region north of Nanyuki.

Most of this route is good tarmac. An SUV is recommended if you plan to go beyond Nanyuki into the more remote areas.

Best for: Cooler weather seekers, adventurous drivers, nature lovers and hikers.

5. Nairobi to Diani Beach β€” 8 Hours (480km)

This is the big one β€” a full day’s drive down the Mombasa highway to Kenya’s most celebrated beach destination. The drive itself is an experience: Athi River plains, Tsavo East and West visible from the road, the descent to the coast, and the crossing on the Likoni Ferry before the final approach to Diani.

Diani Beach offers white sand, warm Indian Ocean water, excellent seafood, and a wide range of activities from snorkelling to kitesurfing. It deserves more than a weekend β€” but a long weekend makes the drive entirely worthwhile.

The Nairobi–Mombasa highway has greatly improved with the expressway section, though the full journey still requires careful attention β€” it is a long drive with mixed road conditions and heavy freight traffic in sections. A comfortable, reliable vehicle is essential for this route. An SUV adds security and comfort on the longer stretches.

Best for: Beach lovers, longer holiday breaks, the full Kenyan road trip experience.

Prepare Your Car Before You Go

Whatever route you choose, a few checks before departing make the journey safer and more enjoyable. Confirm your tyre pressures and condition, check oil and coolant levels, ensure your spare tyre is inflated and your jack is in the vehicle, top up your fuel before leaving Nairobi, and carry a basic emergency kit β€” a torch, a phone charger, some water and snacks.

A reliable, well-maintained vehicle transforms a road trip from a worry into a joy. If you are thinking about upgrading to a more capable vehicle before your next adventure, come see us.
